Saudade

A two-faced installation: The shadow drawing and the sound work. Both introduce us to the feeling of « saudade », the Portuguese emotion that can’t be translated. Therefore, without the obstacle of the language I have made a sensible introduction of this multifaced feeling of longing. In an obscure room with multiple releases of sound, and directory lights like the work of Boltanski, it can be sometimes uneasy as we get in.
I explored the theme like a travel story, based on the 500 years old book « Peregrinação » ( Peregrination ) written by Fernão Mendes Pinto. He tells us amazing stories of the explorers who left Portugal to discover the unknown in the XVI century. So, my project is based on the unknown and unseen before. What a better way rather then the shadows to explore the unknown?
